I'm gearing up to photograph a special event later on this month and I can't wait. It's the Greek flag raising ceremony. It celebrates Greek Independence day from Turkey.
Every year, the church holds a couple of ceremonies commemorating the event. When I was a Greek dancer in high school, we used to put on a show for the community. We would dress up in our costumes which our mother's hand made using patterns copied from authentic Greek costumes. There would be food: τυρóπιτα (tiropetes: cheese pies), σπανακόπιτα (spanakopita: cheese and spinach pastries), and κουλουράκια (koulourakia: sugar cookies). The priests would bless the event before the flag was raised, signaling our continued independence.
Here are a handful of photos from last year's event. More to come!
